SECOND COMING

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also (John 14:1-3).

Greetings!

The Second Coming, also called the Second Advent or the Parousia, in Christianity is referring to the future return of Jesus Christ in glory, when it is understood that he will set up his kingdom, judge his enemies, and reward the faithful, living and dead. The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is mentioned in the Bible several times.

When we look at the Bible, we can readily discover that the Lord’s return is prophesied in two different ways. Besides His public descent upon a cloud, He also will descend in secret. For example, the Bible records: “If therefore you shall not watch, I will come on you as a thief” (Revelation 3:3). “Behold, I come as a thief” (Revelation 16:15). “And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go you out to meet him” (Matthew 25:6). “Therefore, be you also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man comes” (Matthew 24:44). These prophecies speak of how the Lord will come quietly like a thief, which means that the Lord will come in secret in the last days.

The Lord's coming is set before us as the great hope for all the believers. Neither death nor the conversion of the world is the hope for the believers, but according to the Scripture, the Lord's return is. It is the hope for those who believe in him. Paul said, “I am on trial for the hope and resurrection of the dead!” (Acts 23:6; cf. 26:6-8; Rom. 8:2325; 1 Cor. 15:19; Gal. 5:5) and “Looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Christ Jesus” (Titus 2:13). Peter wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pet. 1:3; cf. 2 Pet. 3:9-13). And John said, “Beloved, now we are the children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be. We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure” (1 John 3:2f.).

Therefore, as followers of Jesus Christ, if we are truly saved, we are required to take part in proclaiming the good news of salvation. By so doing, we help others prepare for Christ’s coming. The second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is an important event in the life of Christians; therefore, through this time of Lent season, let us try to ponder on this question i.e. How prepared are we? and act accordingly as we wait for His return. Matthew 24:42-44 says: be prepared because we do not know what day the Lord will come. However, to understand this, a homeowner, who knew exactly when a burglar was coming, would stay alert and not permit the house to be broken into. You also must be ready all the time, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

God bless us all!
