HOLY SPIRIT

Let us start this meditation with the prayer of song writer Andrew Reed “Holy Ghost, with light divine, Shine upon this heart of mine; Chase the shades of night away, Turn my darkness into day.”
Spirit is a common ideology in Indian context with good and evil spirits. The Holy Bible introduces the concept of Holy Spirit which exists from the time of creation of this world to till time. The creative work of the Holy Spirit is well expressed by the book of Job which says “The Spirit of God has made me.” (Job 33:4)
The presence of the Spirit is sometimes made known by such manifestations as wind, fire, or the form of a dove and so on. The Holy Bible portray Holy Spirit as a counsellor, helper, strengthener, supporter, adviser, advocate and ally. The role of Holy Spirit is to speak, convince, testify, show, lead, guide, teach, prompt speech, command, forbid, desire, help, intercede with groans, and be grieved, lied to and blasphemed. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Gal 5:22)
Jesus’ history begins with the Holy Spirit. Jesus had a unique relationship with the Spirit in his birth, baptism, temptation, ministry, death, resurrection and ascension. Jesus announces Holy Spirit as a replacement for him in this world to his disciples, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.” (Jn 14:26) Jesus Christ who commissioned His disciples to go into all the world and proclaim the good news, (Mk 16:15) strongly states to them that you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. (Acts 1:8)
Jesus Christ encourages the believers to worship God in spirit as God is Spirit. The Holy Spirit of God is a Person of the triune Godhead, as much as the Father and Son are Persons. In Keshab Chandra Sen’s view, Trinity can be described as the Father, above, The Son below, The Holy Ghost within. Divinity coming down to humanity is the Son; Divinity carrying up humanity to heaven is Holy Ghost. The Spirit represent the holy influence and power of God. Through the power of the Spirit men too are given the possibility of becoming like Jesus Christ. Let us try to follow Christ with the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
At this time of Lent, let us remember how “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.” (Lk 4:1) The Spirit led Jesus to overcome the temptations which the devil brought and again He was filled with the power of the Spirit before He started His ministry. It was by the power of Spirit, He brought healing to the sick, and liberated the poor, captives and the oppressed.
Let us understand the power and significance of Holy Spirit and Let us humble ourselves asking to God like the psalmist David in this life of ups and downs with insecurity and fear, “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Let your good (Holy) spirit lead me on a level path.” (Ps 143:10)
